I just ran out of gas.
I left on a trip to McDicks of all places. It’s a 160km round trip for me, over a mountain. I only was going to McDicks, no other reason for the drive. I knew I was cutting it close and that there are no open gas stations at this time of night in my area.
This is where the Jeep sits. It’s -10F and dropping. I saw two other cars the whole trip, which for the most part has marginal cell coverage at best. The last 30km of the mighty 4.0 coughing and stuttering — and wondering whether this hill or the next one will be my last— have been incredibly stressful.
My driveway is between the first and second streetlights. This could have been much, much worse.
Don’t be stupid, Oppo.

The current debate is whether to leave the Jeep sitting here in the street (in the middle of the only plowed lane — we got a foot or so of snow and my street’s hardly a priority) and deal with it in the morning, or go siphon enough old shitty gas out of the Niva to get me into my driveway and hopefully to the gas station tomorrow.

Whoa man it’s super you made it back...well, very nearly. “The Force is strong in this one”
Personally there are probably lots of times it should be given a rest, but I hate leaving anything incomplete and besides, being so anal about vehicles, I wouldn’t be able to rest till it was back in the nest
So what will/did you decide? Once again, it’s awesome you made it back :)

Pulled about a gallon of gas out of the Niva, which was enough for the 200 feet to complete the journey. I’m actually ALARMED it was that easy. Seriously, it was easier to siphon the gas out than it was for me to find my empty (oops) gas can under the snow in the back of the truck, and then get into my neighbour’s unlocked garage where the Niva is living until the engine goes back in. I didn’t even get any gas in my mouth! No wonder locking gas caps are a thing!
With -17F as the forecast low (-34 with windchill...) I decided it was best to get it up to where I could plug her in to keep her toasty tonight. First time using the block heater this season. It’s three miles to the gas station so I think I should be good with that gallon, but it’ll be a spluttery drive for sure. I just don’t really feel like putting my lips on a tube that very recently had gas flowing through it.

At home now, in bed, with the Jeep sitting in my driveway where it belongs. One advantage to running out 200 feet from home is that it’s not all that far to walk with gas after siphoning from your other car, which I’ve alarmingly just discovered is disturbingly easy.

This is why the MFC goes into the back of the truck in October; running out of fuel in the winter with kiddos onboard is not an option.

I usually have a can back there but it’s empty right now because I helped someone else out a week ago and forgot to fill it back up. The aggravating part here is I went out to start the truck, and then my brother called to discuss Christmas plans, so it idled for an hour or so before I left. Given the 200 ft to my driveway I would have made it home if I hadn’t warmed it up, or even if I’d shut it off and gone into the McDicks instead of idling in the drive through for 15 minutes.

I’ve had this happen a couple of times on motorcycles. My old bike had a “reserve” fuel petcock switch and no tank gauge. So a couple of times while on my way to work or home, I’d hit reserve, park the bike, and forget that I had hit reserve before I parked it. Once I pushed the bike about half a mile down the freeway to an exit, and then through two lights and a U-turn on a six lane road to get gas! The other time I hitched and filled a water bottle with gas haha.
